You must start with the book labeled education of... Vol. 1. This one is vol. 2, starting with chapter 11. Ok, now that is out of the way. The plot is all about love and its absence and its poor imitators. Not much of a story. The magic is in Flaubert's gorgeous language and in the breadth and depth of emotion the central character, a young man, experiences. I've been reading almost nothing but 19th century French literature for two years or so and am completely enamored of it. Balzac, Sand, Musset, Zola, Hugo.... And Flaubert. None of them disappoint. This isn't my favorite Flaubert, but it's a worthwhile read. Read it. Then go read the others I mentioned.Product details

Althought I read it through, I found it slow going and rather boring. Not something I'd read again, and i donated it to my local library.
It's okay, but not my cup of tea. Found it very longwinded, but I'm sure a classic in its time.
FYI This is the SECOND-HALF of Flaubert's great novel, "A Sentimental Education," and consists of chapters 11-20 to complete the story begun in the previous volume. That first part (chapters 1-10) is also available from the in a free public domain edition, but under a slightly different title "Sentimental education vol 1." Both volumes are nicely formatted and have footnotes, but the translator is not identified. Obviously, it will be a much more pleasurable reading experience to read both halves in proper sequence.
